The Hidden Impact of COVID on High Performers: Why 'Functioning' Isn’t the Same as Flourishing

We’re still living with the impact of #COVID, just not in ways you can always see.

In a recent coaching session, a client, a thoughtful, capable, high-performing single #mother, paused mid-conversation and said quietly:

“I kept going through the #pandemic, there wasn’t really a choice. But something in me shifted back then… and I don’t think it ever quite came back. People have moved on, but part of me still feels stuck there.”

That stayed with me.

Because I’ve heard this more than once.

Many people didn’t collapse during the pandemic.

They held families, teams, and themselves together through sheer determination.

They did what they had to.

And because they made it through, the assumption is: they’re fine now. ????

But the truth is, many of them are still tired, not in a physical sense, but emotionally.

Quietly.

Privately.

They’re functioning, yes. But not flourishing.

And the hardest part? No one is asking anymore.

We’ve moved on fast, faster than people have had time to process what they lived through.

Faster than they’ve been able to recover from the weight of it all.
If you lead a team, check in again genuinely.
If you’re in HR, create safe spaces for these feelings to be named.
And if you’re feeling this yourself, please know you’re not alone and that you don’t need to power through in silence.

As a #coach, I support #leaders and #teams in navigating this ongoing, often invisible impact.

If this resonates and you'd like to create more space for honesty and healing in your #organisation, I’d be happy to have a #conversation.

Because real #leadership is still asking the question:

How are you really doing?
