Fear of change is common. We all feel it. When I
was laid off, I was scared. I wondered, “What now?” I spent time thinking
about what I would do next and remembered something that had really fired me
up. I was fortunate enough to be a coach for co-workers, and I remembered
that every time I finished a session, I would say to myself, “Can I just do
this all the time?” Well, when the lay-off happened, I looked at this as
my chance to dig into coaching full time.
The practical (let’s call it the scaredy-cat) side of me was
afraid and kept pushing me to focus only on finding a new job. It took
some time but I was able to investigate what it was that I was afraid of and
found my path forward. I would have loved to have help from a coach like
me to get me through that process, but with time, I got there on my own.
How? I found some tools that helped me move past that fear
and take action. If you want to do this for yourself, first, define what
it is you’re afraid of, but be aware, there may be more than one thing you’re
concerned about. Once you know what your fears are, you can work on trying
to prevent them from happening and/or think about how you can fix the situation
if your worst fear does occur. This gives you the sense that you control
things, not your fear.
Identifying your fear is the first step. Once you know that,
you can make the change you need.
Jack Canfield, the founder of Chicken Soup for the Soul
Enterprises, said, “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” And, I’m
proof of that.
I’d love to help you work through the fear that is holding
you back.
