We all have things we judge about ourselves. In my case, I haven’t been happy with my motivation level and have been hard on myself for not being more active and working harder on my plan to get healthy. How did I get past this? The answer was to be curious about why I was not making the progress I wanted. Instead of judging myself, I started looking at what was going on around me. I got curious instead of judgmental and realized I’ve had a hell of a year being laid off and recovering from emergency surgery which led to general frustration and a sense of defeat. When I was able to pause and be more curious about what was going on, I was able to better understand what was happening to me and make a better plan to move forward.
So, curiosity is a cure for judgement and can help you make
the change you need. Instead of judging yourself, ask yourself questions like,
“Why do I feel this way? What’s causing
me to think this? How would I feel if I
looked at this differently?” Answering these questions can be empowering and
give you the insight you need to continue.
And, double shot of knowledge, being curious helps you in
the working world too. Instead of
judging people or ideas, be curious and say things like, “Tell me more,” or
“I’m curious about that.” It can help you build stronger relationships with
your coworkers.
Sometimes this is hard to do on your own. That’s where a coach can help. I can be that person in your corner supporting you and saying, “I believe in you. You’ve got this.” Or “tell me more about that.”
